Register a death and notifying others
When a person passes away, their death must be registered. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland this needs to be done within 5 days. In Scotland you have 8 days.
You can find your nearest register office online at www.gov.uk/register-a-death. Here you can find information about local restrictions and how to make an appointment.
Tell Us Once – Government Service
Tell Us Once is a service that lets you report a death to most government organisations in one go. This includes:
- HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC)
- Department of Work and Pensions (DWP)
- Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and others
